Final year Ontario Veterinary College student veterinarians begin their clinical year with an eight-week externship where they have an opportunity to practice their skills in a real world setting as part of a veterinary team providing animal care to the public. Dr. Morganna Turner, OVC DVM 2022, completed her externship in the summer of 2021 at the Paris Veterinary Clinic in Paris, Ontario.

The transition from third to fourth year marks a significant milestone for student veterinarians at the University of Guelph’s Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) as they move from lectures and labs into a year of intensive clinical training.  

A portable DNA sequencing kit, smaller than a phone, helped bring next generation technologies to a university in Brazil to support research and learning in the field of veterinary microbiology. 

Communication touches every aspect of veterinary medicine from client to team interactions. Just as technical skills are honed by repeated practice, continual refinement of clinical communication skills is a critical component in building the student veterinarian’s skill set.

OVC professor Dr. Pavneesh Madan brings virtual reality and gamification to the anatomy lab to help student veterinarians learn about dog and cow anatomy. The innovative approach is believed to be the first use of virtual reality for teaching anatomy at a Canadian veterinary college.
