Intake is measured in terms of dry matter as dry matter intake (DMI). Maintenance DMI is approximately 2% of body weight on an all forage diet. Grain/supplements are added as nutrient requirements surpass what is provided in forage. For example, high production lactating dairy cows can have a DMI of up to 4% (double maintenance DMI).
