Collaborative and Interdisciplinary Specializations

Neuroscience Collaborative Specialization

Biomedical Sciences was one of the founding Departments of the Collaborative Specialization in Neuroscience. This specialization offers graduate students the opportunity to delve into neuroscience research alongside their departmental degree program, providing multidisciplinary exposure to this dynamic field. This unique combination of multidisciplinary studies provides students with the best possible foundation for academic careers in neuroscience and related areas. The specialization includes participation from core faculty in the following departments: Animal Biosciences, Biomedical Science, Clinical Studies, Human Health and Nutritional Sciences, Integrative Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Pathobiology, Population Medicine, and Psychology. Students in the Collaborative Neuroscience Specialization are required to complete two neuroscience-specific graduate courses along with the course requirements for their MBS, MSc or PhD degrees.

Requirements

In addition to the program requirements of the participating department in which the student is enrolled, the following courses are required:

  • NEUR*6000 Principles of Neuroscience (0.5 credit)
  • NEUR*6100 Seminar in Neuroscience (0.0 credit) – students must register for this every Fall and Winter semester that they are enrolled in the program.

Students are encouraged to review to the Neuroscience Collaborative Specialization Website for additional information, special circumstances and suggestions when selecting Advisory Committee Members.

Regenerative Medicine Collaborative Specialization

The Collaborative Specialization in Regenerative Medicine (RM) offers graduate students interested in regenerative medicine the opportunity to combine their departmental degree program with multidisciplinary training in stem cell therapy and engineering techniques to treat diseases that currently have limited or no treatment options. Students completing this specialization will be well-positioned to pursue academic or industry careers in this dynamic, evolving research field.
Participating academic programs include ones in Biomedical Sciences, Clinical Studies, Engineering, and Human Health and Nutritional Sciences, as well as the Doctor of Veterinary Science program.
Students in the Regenerative Medicine Collaborative Specialization are required to complete two RM-specific graduate courses along with the course requirements for their MBS, MSc, MASc, PhD or DVSc degrees.

Requirements

In addition to the program requirements of the participating department in which the student is enrolled, the following courses are required:

  • BIOM*6920    Comparative Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine [0.5 credit]
  • BIOM*6930    Concepts in Human Regenerative Medicine [1.0 credit]

Students are encouraged to review to the Regenerative Medicine Collaborate Specialization Academic Calendar for additional information, special circumstances and suggestions when selecting Advisory Committee Members.

Toxicology Collaborative Specialization

The Collaborative Toxicology Specialization (MBS, MSc & PhD) is an interdepartmental collaborative specialization that focuses on research and teaching in toxicology. Students often seek to enhance their graduate studies through collaborative specializations. By completing such programs, students not only deepen their knowledge in their research area but also understand how their work aligns with the collaborative program. Students enrolled in the Collaborative Toxicology Specialization are required to complete two Toxicology-specific graduate courses along with the course requirements for their MBS, MSc or PhD degrees.

Requirements

In addition to the program requirements of the participating department in which the student is enrolled, the following courses are required:

  • TOX*6000 Advanced Topics in Toxicology (0.5 credit)
  • TOX*6200 Advanced Principles in Toxicology (0.5 credit)

Students are encouraged to review to the Toxicology Collaborative Specialization Website for additional information and suggestions when selecting Advisory Committee Members.
