Current Mood; RABID!

Posted September 1, 2017

I am now in the final week of my practicum placement at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) working in the Animal Health and Welfare Branch Veterinary Sciences Unit. I have learned so much during my time here and have gained an incredible appreciation of the important role that veterinary science plays in public health. I was able to gain an entirely new perspective by shifting away from a human-centric view of public health and focused more on veterinary issues.

Looking Back on Four Months at PHAC

Posted August 30, 2017

Writing this blog post, it’s hard to believe I have entered the final week of my practicum placement at the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). As a quick recap, I have been working in one of the Guelph, ON PHAC offices over the past four months. My primary project has focused on developing a manuscript looking at different drinking and recreational water exposures across Canada.

A Few Last Words on Practicum Experiences from a Student at Oxford County Public Health

Posted August 29, 2017

My summer at Oxford County Public Health may be finished, but the valuable experiences that I have absorbed along the way will last forever.

The purpose of my practicum project was to better understand the changes that occurred to the food premises inspection workload (i.e., number of food premises inspections) in Oxford County as a result of the provincial modifications to the risk assessment tool instituted in 2015.

PHAC Practicum: There’s only how many weeks left?!

Posted July 24, 2017

Even though I am about to enter the final month of my practicum with the Public Health Agency of Canada, my work feels like it is only just getting started! Here at the Centre for Food-borne, Environmental, and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, my data analysis is complete and I have been working away at a draft manuscript, a report on Canadians’ exposures to animals. The data analysis proved to be much more interesting than anticipated, and there were probably many more things that could have been explored if more time was available.
