Profile

Following graduation from the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) in the OVC class of 1985 (the Polar Bears), I practiced in Owen Sound, Ontario for 3 years. Then, I went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison where I completed an American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) residency in Small Animal Internal Medicine and obtained a Master of Science in Veterinary Science investigating hyperthermia as a cancer treatment for dogs. I achieved board certification in the ACVIM specialty of Internal Medicine. I also obtained the Certificate of Specialization from the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA).

I was a staff veterinarian at OVC before joining the faculty at Oklahoma State University (OSU) for 5 years before returning to OVC. I completed a Medical Oncology Fellowship at Colorado State University and achieved board certification in the ACVIM specialty of Oncology.

At the University of Guelph, I was a founding co-Director of the Institute for Comparative Cancer Investigation (ICCI). I helped establish the ICCI’s Companion Animal Tumour Sample Bank (CATSB). I worked, with the support of the OVC Pet Trust, to develop the Mona Campbell Centre for Animal Cancer which opened in 2012 as the most comprehensive animal cancer treatment and One Health translational research centre in Canada and one of the few in the world. I obtained membership for the University of Guelph in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Cancer Institute’s Comparative Oncology Program, Bethesda, Maryland, USA. The University of Guelph was the first international member of the National Cancer Institute – Center for Cancer Research (NCI-CCR) Comparative Oncology Trial Consortium (COTC).

I am Professor of Oncology & Internal Medicine in the Department of Clinical Studies where I am a veterinary medical oncology clinician/scientist teaching veterinary undergraduate students and post graduate veterinarians. My research employs novel therapeutic and diagnostic agents and techniques in clinical trials with veterinary cancer patients. Much of my research involves One Health translational clinical research.
