The MPH Program was well-represented at the 10th Annual Centre for Public Health and Zoonses (CPHAZ) Symposium this month, with faculty, students, and alumni sharing their public health research findings. MPH alumni, and now PhD students, Angie Bosman and Courtney Primeau, gave posters and oral presentations on antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance, respectively. Current MPH students also presented, including Adele Heagle (Ankaa, a mobile application for Canadian refugees) and Shannon Brown (skin cancer and tanning in sexual minority populations).
Congratulations to Shannon Brown who won first place for best student oral presentation at the CPHAZ Symposium. Shannon delivered an outstanding presentation summarizing the results of her recent systematic review, which she conducted during the second year of her MPH degree. In her speech, she indicated that although most health promotion initiatives for indoor tanning cessation target young women, the results of her review demonstrate that sexual minority men indoor tan at similar rates as young women and face greater risk of skin cancer than heterosexual men. She closed her talk with a call-to-action to encourage public health to incorporate this population into indoor tanning cessation and skin cancer prevention messaging and initiatives. Well done, Shannon!
