Andrew S. Peregrine

Associate Professor   |   BVMS, PhD, DVM, Diplomate EVPC, Diplomate ACVM (Veterinary Parasitology)

Research Interests

Epidemiology and impact of parasitic infections. Development of parasite control programs that minimize the rate of development of drug resistance.

Research projects are currently being carried out with the following objectives:

  • Determine the efficacy of closantel against ivermectin- and fenbendazole-resistant Haemonchus contortus infections in sheep;
  • Describe the immune response of replacement ewes to Haemonchus contortus infection over their first and second grazing seasons in Ontario;
  • Identify the relationship between stress and general immune responses of sheep and the immune response to Haemonchus contortus infection;
  • Determine if drug-resistant strains of Dirofilaria immitis (heartworm) are present in Ontario dogs;
  • Identify risk factors for the occurrence of drug-resistant genotypes of Dirofilaria immitis;
  • Determine the prevalence of Echinococcus multilocularis in wild canids in southern Ontario;
  • Identify high risk areas or “hot spots” for Echinococcus multilocularis infection in southern Ontario wild canids;
  • Determine the prevalence of Echinococcus multilocularis in dogs visiting off-leash dog parks in the Golden Horseshoe region of southern Ontario.
