Profile

Andrew Peregrine obtained his BVMS, PhD and DVM from the University of Glasgow, Scotland. He then worked for 9 years as a research scientist at the International Laboratory for Research on Animal Diseases, Nairobi, Kenya, where he carried out research to improve control of tropical parasites of cattle. Since 1997 he has been an Associate Professor in clinical parasitology at the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph, where he teaches DVM students in all years of the program. In addition, his research interests currently include emerging zoonotic parasite infections of companion animals, and sustainable control of gastro-intestinal parasites of sheep. He is a diplomate of the European Veterinary Parasitology College and the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists.

Research Interests

Epidemiology and impact of parasite infections. Emerging parasitic zoonoses. Sustainable control of gastrointestinal parasites of sheep.

Research projects are currently being carried out with the following objectives:

  • Describe the immune response of replacement ewes to Haemonchus contortus infection over their first and second grazing seasons in Ontario;
  • Evaluate the utility of the carbohydrate larval antigen (CarLA®) saliva test to lower the risk of gastrointestinal parasitism in Ontario sheep flocks
  • Determine if drug-resistant strains of Dirofilaria immitis (heartworm) are present in Ontario dogs;
  • Determine the prevalence of Echinococcus multilocularis in wild canids in southern Ontario;
  • Identify high risk areas or “hot spots” for Echinococcus multilocularis infection in southern Ontario wild canids;
  • Determine the prevalence of Echinococcus multilocularis in dogs visiting off-leash dog parks in the Golden Horseshoe region of southern Ontario.
