Posted August 4, 2020

Through the OVC Summer Core program, I attended the BSc Stream Networking Event. There were 5 speakers at this event: Dr. Tyler Hickey, Dr. Danika Hawthorn, Dr. Steven Roche, Dr. Benjamin Van Galen, and Dr. Adena Commisso. Although I found each of the speakers’ presentations interesting, I personally found Dr. Steven Roche’s presentation caught my attention the most because it was the most applicable and relatable to me and what I would like to do in the future.

On July 23rd , I had the opportunity to attend a networking event with various professionals who completed wither BSc at University of Guelph.

Though everyone in this session has completed a professional degree at some point, I.e. MD, PharmD, etc. It was very interesting to hear them talk about their path on getting there. For some of them, the path was very direct, with them going onto to professional school directly from undergraduate. For others, they have chosen an academia path which may involve an MSc or PhD degree prior.

Role of a scientific editor at Nature Communications - Majesta Roth

Posted July 30, 2020

Upon completing the CORE program last summer, one of my main takeaways was the opportunity to learn about professions that I would never have considered directly from the individuals working in such positions. This past week, we had the opportunity to hear from Dr. Fiona Carr, a team manager and senior editor at Nature Communications, a scientific journal in the family of the world-renowned journal Nature. Prior to this talk, I knew little about academic publishing, and others are likely in the same position.

DVM Networking Session July 21 - Diane Ho

Posted July 29, 2020

Before being an OVC student, I thought that clinical practice was one of the few career choices after graduating vet school. However, the DVM networking events hosted by the Summer CORE program have shown me the vast diversity in career opportunities for a DVM. Of particular interest to me were the careers paths of Dr Paige Golden (Senior Veterinary Communication Manager at Purina Petcare Canada) and Dr Shawn MacKenzie, I had a strong interest in companion animal practice but I felt like I needed more direction.

On July the 23rd the CORE group of undergraduate students had the opportunity to meet with, learn from, and ask questions to Dr. Fiona Carr, an editor for the journal Nature Communications, one of the more well known names in the world of scientific publications. It was a genuinely unique experience and an exposure to what is, in reality, a significant portion of the scientific process that I had never given much thought to.
