Throughout the day, we heard various speakers ranging from a University of Toronto professor talking about the niche market of wool, Animal Health Lab veterinarians, and several vets and students talking about their studies and work. What stood out to me at the Small Ruminant Research Forum was the opening presentation, by the dean of the OAC, Dr. Rene Van Acker.

As a participant in the CORE program, I had the privilege of attending the OIRM Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Symposium in the heart of Toronto. The conference was primarily comprised of medical researchers working to develop human treatments, rather than those targeted at animals; this difference had been what prompted my interest in attending. With a summer filled with interesting animal-centered conferences, I also greatly enjoyed being exposed to human research. 
 

ORIM Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Symposium - Nicole Leblanc

As part of the OVC CORE summer program, I had the opportunity to attend the ORIM Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Symposium Held on May 9th. I was particularly interested in this opportunity as I am working on a project based on stem cells and am interested in seeing what other research is occurring out there. The day was packed with 19 different speakers, some of which really caught my attention.

38th Annual Southern Ontario Neuroscience Association Meeting - Jude Frie

On May 4th 2018, I was given the opportunity to attend the 38th annual SONA conference. The conference was incredibly fascinating and enrichening. It enabled me to see the large diversity of research being done in Neuroscience in Southern Ontario as well as what is to be expected next year when I will hopefully present a poster myself.

As a participant of the 2017 CORE program, I had the opportunity to attend the 10th annual ICCI symposium at the Ontario Veterinary College. I found the symposium to be a very informative event where I was able to learn about the research being conducted by various groups at the OVC. Although my interests and research focus are primarily on human health and medicine, I have started to appreciate the tremendous amount of research that is initially targeted for veterinary patients, but ends up having tremendous applicability for human patients as well.

When most people think of veterinarians, they picture a veterinarian working in a clinic or traveling from farm-to-farm in their truck. However, there’s an entire area of veterinary medicine that the general public doesn’t normally see – and that’s veterinary diagnostic labs. Although laboratorians don’t always directly interact with clients and patients, they have a pivotal role in public health and disease surveillance.

On June 7th I had the opportunity to attend the Canadian Association of Veterinary Pathologists 43rd Annual Meeting held at the Ontario Veterinary College. It was a small conference and I was one of the lucky few students who were able to watch very talented pathologists present to their colleagues.
