ICCI Cancer Research Symposium - Mary Madden

Last week I had the opportunity and privilege to attend the ICCI Cancer Research Symposium. A memorable moment for me was listening to Dr. Paul Boutros' speech on prostate cancer and why some tumors are more aggressive than others. Furthermore, how this aggressiveness can determine the treatment regimen for patients. It was unbelievable to see his and his team's ability to create complex algorithms that combine large amounts of data in order to come up with these clinically significant results.

This past week I was privileged to attend the 2018 ICCI Cancer research symposium at the Ontario Veterinary College. This conference was filled with a day of novel findings, interesting results and very insightful and intelligent peers. Going into the symposium with minimal cancer research knowledge, I was pleasantly surprised with my ability to understand and follow the research presented.

Any misconceptions I had that research is done alone, locked away in a lab were corrected at the 11th annual Institute for comparative cancer investigation symposium. Each presenter’s topic, regardless of how It related to any work I’ve done or understand for that matter, showed multitudes of dedication and passion. I don’t think one seminar was free for obstacles and tribulations but each had a family of researchers and mentors around them. Knowing how vital collaboration is to everyone’s work is encouraging to me, hoping to pursue career in research.

Cancer is all encompassing. Regardless of who you are, or what walk of life you come from, the vast majority of modern society has been affected in someway by the presence of the disease. Either through personal suffering from the disease, having a pet that may be affected, or knowing someone who has been. The harsh reality is that almost every individual has a story with cancer as the antagonist, and in a way, we are all bonded by our experience and frustration with the disease.

Last week I had the pleasure of sitting down and attending the ICCI 2018 Cancer Research Symposium. The keynote speaker was Dr. Gustafson, the Chair in Comparative Oncology and the Flint Animal Cancer Center Director at Colorado State University. Hearing him speak at the symposium was captivating, and his areas of research are very interesting. One of the ideas that I really found fascinating was his work on different cytotoxic chemotherapy drug combinations. His drug combinations were used on tumor xenografts in mouse models in order to assess the tumors response.
