ICCI Cancer Research Symposium - Colin Jamieson

On May 28th, I was able to attend the ICCI cancer symposium. The day consisted of a series of talks from faculty and different researchers summarizing their research findings and pursuits. It was very interesting seeing the different paths researchers are taking to take on cancer. It was truly inspiring and extremely educational being exposed to such a diverse group of research scientists.

On July 3rd I had the opportunity to attend the Career Options networking session as a part of the CORE program. The session consisted of three Guelph alumni talking about their current positions and the path through which they got to where they are today. I found this session to be very interesting and informative, as it opened my eyes to other career options that are available for people who studied in similar fields to what I am studying.

I groggily opened my eyes as I felt a hand on my shoulder shake me awake. After an hour long ride, I was finally able to peer out of the school bus windows and was met with a familiar sight. The sign “Welcome to Toronto Zoo” arched over the entrance of the largest zoo in Canada. Thanks to the OVC CORE program, a small group of us were about to take a behind-the-scenes look at the Toronto Zoo, a unique privilege that would allow us to see all the hard work that goes on beyond the eyes of the public. Eager to get the day started, I hopped off the bus and marched into the zoo.

As a summer CORE student with the OVC, I had the opportunity to attend a behind the scenes trip to the Toronto zoo. The morning started off with a talk from one of the zoo's veterinarians detailing various aspects of the job, as well as providing insight to the how the process of becoming a zoo vet works. We talked about his journey through vet school, doing his residency at the Toronto zoo in conjunction with the OVC, and how he worked for the Adelaide zoo before returning for a year long position at the Toronto zoo.

On Saturday July 20, I had the privilege of attending a Behind the Scenes Tour of the Toronto Zoo, with an emphasis on the veterinary work done within the zoo, which often involves consults with the Ontario Veterinary College.

On May 28th, I had the opportunity to attend the ICCI cancer symposium. The day included a series of talks about the exciting research that’s being conducted here at Guelph and at other veterinary schools. It was inspiring to see researchers speak about their projects which varied from possible cancer biomarkers to dysregulated cell signaling pathways and more. It was especially exciting to see how the clinical applications of this research can improve the lives of companion animals and humans. In particular, I found Dr. Abrams-

OIRM Stem Cell Conference - Victoria Donovan

Attending the Ontario Institute for Regenerative Medicine (OIRM) Conference in Toronto at the SickKids Research Institute was an eye opening, almost futuristically surreal experience. Having completed Phase One of the DVM program I was given a sound introduction to the topic of stem cells and the power they hold. The lectures and panel discussions that took place during the OIRM conference put into perspective the real world applications of the material I was taught.

I was given the opportunity to travel to Worcester, Massachusetts with Meg Freedman (OVC 2022) from July 24-28 to present our research projects at the 2019 Boehringer Ingelheim National Veterinary Student Symposium held by Tufts University. The NVSS is an annual research conference where student veterinarians are given a platform to show case their summer research projects, engage with fellow students and graduates, as well as explore the diversity of veterinary research being conducted around the world.

On July 20th, I attended the Toronto Zoo with the opportunity to go behind the scenes to see the wild birds they use for their shows. Upon arrival, their volunteer staff took us from the entrance of the zoo to one of their conference rooms within the Wildlife Health Center. Shortly after arriving, we were introduced to a knowledgeable veterinarian who presented to us the challenges and basic information of dealing with exotic animals. Exotic animals are challenging to treat for as they don’t have drugs made specifically for them.
