39th Southern Ontario Neuroscience Association (SONA) – Anthony Nguyen

Just a few days before May 3rd 2019, I was told that I would have the opportunity to travel with my supervisor Dr. Bailey and his lab to attend SONA. Although I was excited to learn and be a part of his lab, I was also nervous and scared. I had just finished my first year of my BSc and I had no idea what to expect. Thankfully, I had my supervisor Dr. Bailey and his wonderful lab who welcomed me into this new experience!

On July 31st I had the opportunity to attend a networking lunch with DVM and Bachelor Alumni from the University of Guelph. This networking event was incredibly insightful with respect to the wealth of jobs available to BSc and DVM alumni. One of the highlights of this event was meeting Katherine Paphitis who holds 4 degrees and is currently completing a PhD in Population Medicine at OVC.

A packed lecture hall full of scientists ready to greet the keynote speaker is something that can be seen at most conferences. The annual Symposium for the Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses has something in particular that sets it apart. It is geared towards being as interdisciplinary and inclusive to as many disciplines as possible. Rather than focusing purely on a quantitative question or particular area of research, the symposium had a theme that was almost impossibly broad in scope.

38th Annual Meeting of the Southern Ontario Neuroscience Association - Myles St-Denis

On May 4th 2018, I had the privilege of attending the 38th annual meeting of the Southern Ontario Neuroscience Association (SONA). This conference was an excellent opportunity for me to learn about the phenomenal research in neuroscience that Southern Ontario has to offer. The experience left me feeling optimistic about what new and interesting research would be taking place in Southern Ontario in the future.

            Growing up in Toronto, I have been a visitor of the Toronto Zoo more times than I can remember. However, on July 14th I was able to see a new and unique perspective to this familiar location. On this bright morning I boarded a bus with my colleagues and set off to the zoo. We were lucky enough to have a school bus that played music, reminiscent of public school field trips.

On June 8th, I was fortunate enough to attend the Public Health and Zoonoses scientific symposium. It was a great opportunity to learn about the different pillars of public health and zoonotic disease. The symposium is run under the Center for Public Health and Zoonoses, otherwise known as CPHAZ. This organization is based at the University of Guelph where they focus on three main areas: research, education and knowledge. Their mandate is “providing focus and leadership for research, education and knowledge dissemination in public health at the human-animal-environment interface”.

The field of medicine is made up of many diverse disciplines, from osteopaths to dentists to nurses and yes -veterinarians. Though each discipline is unique in its own right, each works towards the same goal of optimizing well-being while simultaneously reducing illness. One Health, headed by Dr. Craig Stephen, is an initiative created to do just that: unite all fields of medicine in hopes of bettering our planet. He sees the differences between the health professions as learning opportunities, with each field giving a fresh perspective on another. 

Behind the Scenes at the Toronto Zoo - Virginia Madsen

Last week on July 14 2018 I had the amazing opportunity through the OVC summer CORE program to explore the Toronto Zoo. The day started at the new Wildlife Health Centre with Dr. Christopher Dutton, Head of Veterinary Services at the Toronto Zoo. Dr. Dutton walked in after attending to an emergency x-ray of one his patients (later our group got to take a peak at the digital x-ray of the wolf). He gave an enthusiastic presentation revealing his journey to this dream job and some of the components of what it entails to provide veterinary care to over 450 different species.

ICCI Cancer Research Symposium - Marissa McGaffey

On May 30th I had the opportunity to attend the ICCI Cancer Research Symposium at the Ontario Veterinary College. The morning was filled with a series of incredibly interesting short talks spanning topics such as canine osteosarcoma, leukemia, methods of identification of tumor cells and the role of small molecules in the development and progression of cancer. Following the short talks, Dr. Paul Boutros took the stage and provided an engaging and informative presentation on his current research at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research.

CPHAZ 2018: Reflecting on One Health and the future - Enise DeCaluwe-Tulk

Earlier this summer, I had the chance to attend the Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses (CPHAZ) Symposium. The keynote speaker, Dr. Craig Stephen said something that I have continued to think about since. He said, “Think about the people you love that will be alive 100 years from now [your kids, grandkids]. Work to make their world just as good, if not BETTER than ours”. Wow, if that’s not a motto to live by I don’t know what is.
