On May 30, 2019, I had the privilege to attend the CPHAZ symposium for my third year in a row and once again it did not disappoint. I find each year I gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the information that is presented. The keynote speaker, Dr. Kirk Leifso, gave an enlightening presentation that explained some of the details surrounding Lyme disease and its diagnosis. Having studied blacklegged tick ecology for the past two years, Lyme disease and its various symptoms and diagnosis, was something I never fully understood.

What would human, animal, and environmental health look like if they were treated as a single, multi-sided concept? In having the privilege to attend the Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses Symposium on May 30th, I feel as though I’ve glimpsed what such an approach could look like in the Canadian health landscape.

ICCI Cancer Research Symposium - Majesta Roth

May 28th, I had the opportunity to attend the 2019 Institute for Comparative Cancer Investigation (ICCI) symposium. This event gathers professionals in cancer biology research and veterinary medicine to share their research, spark conversation, and foster collaboration. The short talks presented throughout the day were incredibly engaging and an interesting amalgamation of topics ranging from oncolytic viral therapy to cancer-linked bacteria. The posters presented by undergraduate students, masters students, and Ph.D. candidates were equally as impressive.

On May 30th, I had the privilege of attending the Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses Symposium. This event brought together experts from a wide variety of backgrounds with the common goal of promoting the well-being of the public. Through a combination of PowerPoint and poster presentations, I was able to greatly broaden my knowledge of this topic. I had previously taken an epidemiology course and seeing how the principles covered in class are applied in the real world helped me better understand them.

On May 30, 2019, I had the privilege of attending the Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses (CPHAZ) Symposium. From its name, this symposium allowed students, faculty, medical doctors, veterinarians, as well as members of the Public Health Agency of Canada to discuss their research and/or areas of interest regarding public health. This experience was very enlightening in that I was able to see the diverse knowledge and intelligence present. During the symposium, I had the chance to listen to presentations given by the individuals with the different educational backgrounds stated above.

On May 30th, 2019, the annual Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses (CPHAZ) Symposium was held at the University of Guelph. To start the morning off, Dr. Malcolm Campbell, the Vice-President of Research at the University of Guelph, welcomed everyone and discussed the importance of bringing zoonotic diseases to the forefront of research and awareness. Next, Dr. Campbell had the pleasure of thanking and welcoming Dr. Mohamed Karmali.

CCSAW Symposium - Caitlin Brown

As a summer research student involved in the CORE program, I was fortunate enough to attend the 12th Annual CCSAW Research Symposium, at the University of Guelph, on May 8th, 2019.

The morning sessions were focused on the welfare of avian species, and the afternoon sessions were focused on the welfare of a variety of species, including mice, mink, fish, cats, pigs, and ruminants. All of the presenters were very well spoken and did an impressive job of answering an array of challenging questions, some from very well known professors including Dr. Ian Duncan and Dr. Georgia Mason.

ICCI Cancer Research Symposium - Emma Stacey

On Tuesday, May 28th, I attended my first conference as a student veterinarian. Hosted at the Ontario Veterinary College, the Institute for Comparative Cancer’s Investigation’s 12th Annual Symposium showcased research in the field of comparative oncology. We learned about developing research in areas such as a vascular normalization, immunotherapy, and radiomics.

CCSAW Symposium - Frank Calvise

I had the pleasure of attending the 12th Annual CCSAW Research Symposium on May 8th 2019. The symposium offered both oral presentations and poster showcases on issues surrounding animal welfare and covered areas such as dairy cattle, poultry, companion animals, fish, research mice and more. This was much more than a fun day filled with interesting presentations for me. It was an opportunity to learn more about a field I am aspiring to be a part of one day.
