CPHAZ Symposium - Cassidy Wong

On May 30th, I was given the opportunity to attend the Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses Annual Symposium. With the increasing importance set on the One Health initiative, there is no better way to bring together, individuals from various disciplines with the same goal of optimizing the well being of all species and the environment. CPHAZ brought together veterinarians, researchers, clinicians, those in public health, and students.

Toronto Zoo Visit - Roseann Kehoe

On Saturday July 20th, I had the opportunity to attend a trip to the Toronto Zoo. We started the day with a presentation describing the roles of a zoo veterinarian. I enjoyed learning about the conservation efforts and treatment methods for zoo animals. As a student veterinarian with experience working with primates, I chose to attend the Animal Management behind the scenes tour with the Western Lowland gorillas.

Boehringer-Ingelheim National Veterinary Scholars Symposium - Megan Freedman

This summer I traveled to Worcester, Massachusetts to attend the Boehringer-Ingelheim National Veterinary Scholars Symposium hosted by Tufts Cumming’s School of Veterinary Medicine. This was a three-day-long conference aimed at veterinary students who were involved in research over the summer. I had the opportunity to prepare and present a poster of my research alongside about 600 other veterinary students from different schools across the world and was able to attend informative talks by veterinarians and professionals from a variety of disciplines.

This year’s Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses Annual Symposium brought together researchers in human and veterinary medicine to discuss topics relating to One Health. At the intersection of human health, veterinary medicine, and the environment, One Health offers a different perspective to the disease dynamics. Some of the highlights of the day were in student presentations, One Health teaching, and split sessions.

On May 9th, I was lucky enough to attend the University of Guelph’s annual Swine Research Day. Swine Research Day is a conference dedicated to presenting findings from a variety of fields within swine research. The day included talks from both faculty and keynote speakers representing a range of fields, presentations by University of Guelph students, as well as many opportunities to network and meet others in the field of swine research.

On May 28th, 2019, I had the privilege to sit in on presentations of some of the most cutting-edge research in oncology to date. The topics spanned many different types of cancer, and the approaches to treatment or prevention were often unique depending on the discipline and specialty of the researcher. This may seem obvious; researchers will solve problems using methods familiar to them and continue to make the world a better place working in their area of expertise.

The concept of ‘One Health’ was defined multiple times during the Centre for Public Health and Zoonosis (CPHAZ) Symposium: ‘solving complex issues in public health using a multi-disciplinary approach and relying on collaboration as well as engagement from the community’. What became evident to me as the day unfolded, was the importance of getting the community at large involved in efforts to improve public health.

I attended the 2019 ICCI Cancer Research Symposium. It was the first cancer related event I had attended and I found it very informative. I enjoyed learning about the research taking place at the University of Guelph. As a prospective graduate student, I found it very eye opening to see what graduate students at the university are working on and their projects. By listening to all of the talks, I realized how much I was interested in immunology and cancer research. As well, it was interesting to learn of novel research findings in cancer research, especially the research discussed by Dr.

On May 30th 2019, I had the opportunity to attend the Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses (CPHAZ) Symposium through the OVC summer CORE program. One point that definitely stood out to me during the conference was that people are not really concerned with zoonoses issues until there is an outbreak. This made me realize how important disease prevention is before it is too late, and an outbreak occurs.
